Third Race of the Scody Cup Series TOUR OF THE MURRAY RIVER September 2 - 9, 2012 (Course yet to be advised)
IT’S THE TIFOSI EYEWEAR MURRAY RIVER TOUR Tifosi Eyewear is the new major sponsor of the Tour of the Murray River road cycling classic, to be held from August 28 – September 4. The Tifosi range, imported into Australia by the Melbourne-based company, The Bicycle Peddler, is America’s leading sunglass brand for cycling and running. The Bicycle Peddler’s managing director John Yeomans is a former top cyclist who wore the Herald Sun Tour’s yellow leader’s jersey for five days in 1974. Yeomans also won the Over 50 sprint championship at the 2002 World Masters’ Games in Melbourne, and raced in Europe as a young cyclist. “Tifosi Enthusiastic Eyewear is delighted to be the major naming rights sponsor of the Tour of the Murray River,” he said. “The Murray tour has a tremendous reputation as a breeding ground for young cyclists. “The honor roll of previous tour champions and stage winners reads like a who’s who of modern Australian road and track cycling.” Yeomans said the Tifosi brand was originally designed for United States military windshields. “The sunglasses are affordably priced and available from cycle shops,” he said. The Tour of the Murray River will start with a waterfront criterium in Yarrawonga on Sunday, August 28, and end with a riverfront kermesse in Mildura on Sunday, September 4. The 847km tour, to be raced in 15 stages, will also visit Cobram, Numurkah, Nathalia, Echuca, Kyabram, Rochester, Kerang, Swan Hill, Lake Boga, Robinvale, Euston, Ouyen, Patchewollock, Merbein and Red Cliffs. The tour is backed by Tourism Victoria, the NSW Government and seven municipal councils – Moira, Campaspe, Gannawarra, Swan Hill, Balranald, Yarriambiack and Mildura. The event is the third race on the four-tour Scody Cup, Australia’s premier domestic road cycling series. The 2011 series began with the five-day Tour of Gippsland, clinched in Paynesville last Sunday by Canberra’s Steele Von Hoff, and will continue with the Eastern Oak Structures Tour of Geelong (August 10-14), the Murray Tour, and the Caterpillar Underground Mining Tour of Tasmania (October 4-9). An accumulative points and prizemoney system operates on the series to produce an overall cup champion, one of the most prestigious titles in Australian road cycling. The Murray tour is a feature event in Cycling Australia’s 2011 national road teams competition.
